That was not to be, as he injured his hamstring in his first jump in the final and had to withdraw.

Rebello, only 19 then, was about to take his jump, but was told to wait since a medal presentation was on. In the cold London weather, Rebello had not warmed up properly and giving it all in his first try, hurt himself.

Rebello’s born and brought up in Bangalore and he did his schooling at the Baldwin Boys’ School. With no knowledge of scientific training methods, he devised his own training systems, learned from pictures in American books, and went on to dominate the Indian scene, after initially making his mark in inter-school competitions in Bangalore.

Rebello also used to compete in long jump and high jump. Marjorie Suares, one of Rebello’s contemperories and a high jumper herself, recalls an incident where he was disqualified for diving over the bar in a competition!

A late starter at 16, Rebello struck gold in the 1946 All India ‘Olympic’ competition in Bangalore. In 1948, he set a national record of 15.29 metres, which stood for almost two decades. The feat fetched him a spot in the Indian team for the London Olympic Games and made him a medal favourite as well, being the best mark in the world that season. But fate had other plans.

After the London Olympics, Rebello faded away from the sports scene as he focused on studies. After graduating from Loyola College in Madras, he joined the Indian Air Force, and retired as a Group Captain in 1980. He was actively involved in the running of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, and then served as a Director in the Sports Authority of India from 1984 to 1988.

The Legend never dies the Star left us and joined the Galaxy from his home in Gurgaon on 28.08 2013 after a long illness. He was 84. Rebello is survived by a daughter and two sons.
Jagannath Manihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05673584515108987818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8452433997436270466.post-65293940208671032042021-06-19T05:23:00.000+05:302021-06-19T05:23:43.307+05:30Indian Olympian Milkha Singh

It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Indian sprint legend Milkha Singh ji passed away on Friday on the 18th of June 2021.

Milkha Singh ji a four-time Asian Games gold medallist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion, missed the bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics by 1/100th of a second.
Mark Andrew Spitz (born February 10, 1950) is an American former
competition swimmer, nine-time Olympic champion, and former world record-holder
in multiple events. He won seven gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in
Munich, an achievement only surpassed by Michael Phelps who won eight golds at
the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Spitz set new world records in all seven
events in which he competed in 1972, a record that still stands. Since the year
1900, no other swimmer has ever gained so great a percentage of all the medals awarded
for Olympic events held in single Games.

Between 1968 and
1972, Spitz won nine Olympic golds plus silver and a bronze, five Pan American golds31
Amateur Athletic Union titles, and eight National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) titles. During those years, he set 35 world records, but two
were in trials and unofficial. With his seven-gold medal performance at Munich
in 1972, he was the most decorated athlete in the history of the Olympic Games
until Michael Phelp's eight-gold medal performance at Beijing 36 years later in
2008. He was named World Swimmer of the Year in 1969, 1971 and 1972 by Swimming World Magazine. He was the third athlete to win nine Olympic
gold medals.

After the Antwerp Games the first Olympic flag went missing, so they had to make a replacement for the 1924 games.
That was in use until the 1988 games. By then it had become quite 'old
and frail', so another replacement was made for the 1992 games.
As for the missing 1920 flag, it was actually stolen as a souvenir (by
an American athlete) who at long last returned it in person to
the IOC a few years ago the Sydney 2000 games to be held. The
ex-athlete wasn't punished, if only because he's too old to sit out any
time in jail

An interesting tale was added to the Olympic marathon,Long before today's notorious scandals involving Tonya Harding,
Michelle Smith, and Ben Johnson there was distance runner Fred Lorz.
Lorz set the standard for Olympic disgrace during the marathon event at
the 1904 Games, when fred Lorz Journeyed a large part of the race in a car to come first.

He was later disqualified and his Compatriot and The "real" winner of the
race was Thomas Hicks, who had to be helped across the finish line after
3 hours, 28 minutes and 53 seconds—the worst marathon time in Olympic
history.Thomas Hicks adjudged the winner.
